Mitchell ⁢Starc Retires From T20 Internationals to Prioritize Test, ODI Cricket

Mount Maunganui, New‌ Zealand ⁤ – Fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket, bringing an end to a 99-match career in the format, to prolong his longevity in Test and‍ One Day International (ODI) cricket. The decision comes ahead of Australia’s upcoming tour ‌of New Zealand.Starc’s exit leaves a notable‌ void in⁣ Australia’s T20 attack, especially with captain Pat ⁣Cummins already sidelined due to a back ‍injury. The 34-year-old was⁤ a key member of Australia’s victorious 2021 T20 World Cup team, which defeated New zealand in⁢ the final in Dubai. He ‌hopes‍ focusing ⁤on the longer formats will allow him to contend for a third ODI World⁢ Cup title at the 2027 tournament.

Selectors will eventually need to assess whether Starc can maintain‌ his ⁣effectiveness as ⁢he approaches his 38th birthday‌ by the⁤ time ⁢of ‍the 2027 ODI World Cup. The immediate impact will be felt ⁣during next month’s‌ three-match T20 series in New Zealand, where Australia will be without both starc and perhaps Cummins.

Nathan Ellis, currently on paternity leave, ⁢and Josh Hazlewood are potential ⁢replacements, while Ben Dwarshuis and⁣ Xavier Bartlett offer left and right-arm seam options respectively.⁤ spencer Johnson, a pace bowler similar to Starc,⁣ is recovering from injury, and Lance Morris is facing a lengthy‍ layoff after undergoing back surgery.
