New Linux Distro ‘kazeta’ Aims to Revive 90s Console Gaming Experience
A new Linux-based operating system,’Kazeta,’ is under development with the explicit goal of recreating the feel of classic 1990s gaming consoles. Created by the developer behind ChimeraOS, Kazeta focuses on ease of use and a streamlined experience for playing retro games, offering a dedicated surroundings distinct from general-purpose desktop Linux distributions.
The project taps into the enduring popularity of retro gaming and the growing desire for dedicated, hassle-free emulation solutions. While Linux already offers robust emulation capabilities, Kazeta aims to simplify the process for users less familiar with the operating system’s complexities. The OS is designed to boot directly into a game library interface, minimizing setup and configuration. According to the project’s github page, Kazeta is built on Arch linux and utilizes a customized version of the KDE plasma desktop environment.
Kazeta’s creator, known as ‘cassette,’ announced the project via GamingOnLinux, stating the intention is to provide a system that feels “like picking up a classic console and just playing.” The OS is currently in early development, with a focus on core functionality and compatibility.
