Canadian Runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot heads to World Championships, Eyes ⁤marathon Debut ‍in‍ New York

BUDAPEST, Hungary ⁣- Charles‍ Philibert-Thiboutot has qualified for the World Athletics Championships and ‌will compete in the 1500 meters, but his ambitions extend ‍beyond the track. The Canadian middle-distance runner is also preparing for his first-ever ⁤marathon, slated for‌ New York later this year.

While acknowledging the challenges of training for ⁢both events concurrently,Philibert-Thiboutot‌ embraces ⁣the demanding schedule. “It is indeed a cushion that will help me in my transition ⁣to New York,” he said, adding,”I like things‍ a little dramatic,as I said.” he recently completed two weeks of training with ‍distances around 180 kilometers, exceeding his usual 140-150 kilometer range.

His coach, Félix-Antoine Lapointe, admits the dual preparation is “a headache, but it’s a beautiful challenge.” They’ve adjusted training to prioritize the marathon as ‌the year progresses, ⁣though a competitive showing remains a goal. “We remain humble that he ⁤will not have a preparation of thunder, but he does not want to go to New York as simple. We try ⁤to find the compromise,” Lapointe explained. An upcoming‍ altitude camp will serve both race⁢ preparations.

Philibert-Thiboutot, aware⁤ of the increasing ‌competition in the 1500m, approaches the World Championships with a realistic outlook. “The ⁢level continues to increase at 1500 meters, ⁤the peloton is releasing, ⁤but I get older,” he ‌stated. “I go there anymore by telling myself that each race‌ could be my last, and I will ⁣give my 110%. And if I give everything I have,I can⁤ surprise, and pass one or two rounds.”

Lapointe notes that simply qualifying‌ for the Championships this⁢ year is “a mission accomplished,” highlighting Philibert-Thiboutot’s consistent ability to advance to semi-final qualifications at major events like the Olympics and World Championships. “It is sure we arrive there wanting to ⁣cause surprises. Even‍ if he aged, he will not be there⁢ just a tourist.”

Looking ahead, Philibert-Thiboutot plans to ⁢return ⁣to Japan – not for running, but for⁢ skiing.
