Jackie Chan‘s ‘The Shadow’s Edge’ Maintains Top Spot at China box Office
“The Shadow’s Edge,” starring Jackie Chan, continued its reign at the China box office, earning $24.7 million over the weekend. The film follows retired Macau surveillance expert Wong Tak-Chung (Chan) as he’s brought back to track a high-tech heist orchestrated by a criminal known as the ”Wolf King,” alongside rookie cop He Qiuguo (Zhang Zifeng),adn facing off against Tony Leung Ka-fai’s fu Longsheng and his gang. The film also topped the global box office chart, according to Comscore.
The strong performance of “The Shadow’s Edge” underscores Chan’s enduring appeal in the Chinese market and signals continued momentum for local-language productions. Overall weekend receipts in China reached $76.4 million, bringing the country’s 2025 year-to-date box office total to $5.457 billion – an 18.4% increase compared to the same period last year.
“Nobody” (Shanghai Animation Film) secured second place with $15.2 million,bringing its cumulative earnings to $202.1 million. The animated film, directed by Yu Shui, reimagines the classic “Journey to the West” mythology. It ranked sixth globally.
“Dead to Rights” (China film) followed in third, adding $8.2 million to its total of $401.4 million. Directed and co-written by Shen Ao (with Zhang Ke and Xu Luyang), the film is set against the backdrop of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre and centers on A Chang (Liu Haoran), a postman who assumes a false identity to aid Chinese soldiers and civilians during the Japanese occupation. it placed tenth on the global chart.
The UK drama “I Swear” (Taopiaopiao) debuted at No. 4 with $7.4 million. Directed by Kirk Jones, the film stars Robert Aramayo as John Davidson, a man living with Tourette Syndrome who became an advocate and speaker, alongside Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson, and Peter Mullan.
“Final Destination: Bloodlines” (New Line) rounded out the top five, collecting $4.5 million for a cumulative total of $18.1 million.
