Modi-Xi Meet: India-China Relations, Border Talks & SCO Summit

Modi-Xi Jinping Meeting Focuses on Border Peace, Bilateral Growth & Counter-Terrorism

During a meeting today in Jin, China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their second meeting in under a year, building on strategic guidelines established during their previous encounter in Kazan, october 2024. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed the press following the discussions, outlining a shared commitment to peaceful coexistence and mutual development.

A key theme of the meeting was the importance of India and China prioritizing domestic development and functioning as partners, rather than rivals, given the combined population of 2.8 billion people the two nations represent. Both leaders agreed that existing differences should not escalate into disputes, and that stable, friendly relations would be mutually beneficial.President Xi Jinping offered four suggestions to strengthen cooperation, wich Prime Minister Modi welcomed. Modi underscored that peace and stability in border areas are essential for the continued progress of bilateral relations. Discussions covered a range of topics including mutual development, trade balance, combating terrorism, and increasing people-to-people contact. The leaders also agreed to collaborate towards a multi-polar Asia.

Regarding economic ties, both leaders acknowledged the potential for Indian and Chinese economies to stabilize global trade. They emphasized the need to reduce the bilateral trade deficit, facilitate increased trade and investment, and enhance policy transparency.

Prime Minister Modi raised the issue of cross-border terrorism during his conversation with President Jinping. He also extended an invitation to President Xi Jinping to attend the BRICS summit scheduled to be held in India in 2026. Both leaders reiterated the importance of finding a mutually acceptable solution to the ongoing border dispute.the meeting also touched upon Myanmar, with Prime Minister Modi welcoming the proclamation of elections and emphasizing India’s commitment to a strong partnership with the nation through it’s “Neighborhood First” policy. He highlighted the importance of development cooperation and requested myanmar’s support for ongoing projects, while also stressing that dialogue remains the best path to lasting peace and stability in the region.
