Breaking: RSF Shelling Kills Seven, Injures 71 in El-Fasher, Sudan
El-Fasher, North Darfur - Seven civilians were killed and 71 others injured Sunday in artillery shelling carried out by the paramilitary rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, according to local doctors.
The Sudanese Doctors Network condemned the killings as a “massacre,” stating the situation in the city amounts to “an integrated genocide, involving bombardment, siege, and systematic starvation of residents.” The group directly attributed duty for the attack to the RSF and urged the international community and local authorities to take “urgent and immediate action to halt the shelling and open safe humanitarian corridors.”
The RSF has not yet commented on the incident.
This latest attack follows a similar incident on Thursday, when the medical group reported 24 deaths and 55 injuries resulting from RSF artillery shelling targeting a marketplace and the Awlad al-Rif neighborhood in El-Fasher.
Local committees and authorities have consistently accused the RSF of repeated artillery attacks and assaults on El-Fasher, which has been under siege as May 10, 2024. The city serves as a critical hub for humanitarian operations across darfur’s five states, and international warnings have highlighted the risks of fighting there.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF began in April 2023. The UN and local authorities report over 20,000 deaths and 14 million displaced individuals. However, research from US universities estimates the death toll to be around 130,000.
