Jakub Jankto: A Footballer’s Courageous Confession
Jakub Jankto, a former midfielder for Sparta Prague, became one of the first Czech league footballers to publicly acknowledge his homosexuality. For a long time, he knew his marriage wasn’t fulfilling, recognizing his attraction to men. However, he was held back by the pressures of the traditionally hyper-masculine world of team sports, where footballers are often perceived as “alpha males.”
“Like everyone else, I have my strengths, I have my weaknesses,” Jankto stated, emphasizing his commitment to living authentically.
His marriage ended in 2021 after a turbulent period, and it was then that he revealed his sexual orientation as the primary reason for the relationship’s failure. Jankto shares a son, David, with his ex-wife, and reports indicate they are now in a better place.His openness is a significant step towards normalizing LGBTQ+ portrayal in Czech sports.
Actress Jitka Smutná, known for her role in the popular Czech series Street, grew up in socialist Czechoslovakia, a time when openly discussing homosexuality was taboo. While not legally punishable, it was a subject rarely addressed publicly. Like many, Smutná initially entered a heterosexual marriage, anticipating the societal expectations of the time.
Though, with the fall of communism and the dawn of a new era, Smutná felt empowered to finally live openly. It took years to find the courage to share her truth, but she ultimately did.
“Being a lesbian is not a ghostly thing and my confession has helped the people around me. Maybe mothers to accept their otherwise oriented child,” smutná explained, highlighting the positive impact of her decision. She emphasized that while there were personal costs, her public profile allowed her to make a difference.
Smutná first confided in her husband, seeking an open discussion after decades together. He reportedly responded with bravery and even welcomed her partner. Though that relationship eventually ended after seven years, Smutná remains resolute in her decision to live authentically.
