Tucanes de tijuana & Chalino Sánchez Collaboration Revives Legacy of Regional mexican Pioneer Rigo Campos
TIJUANA, MEXICO – In a historic move uniting generations of regional Mexican music, Tucanes de Tijuana has released a collaborative track featuring the posthumous vocals of the late Chalino Sánchez, honoring the legacy of composer Rigo Campos. The song, a reimagining of Campos’ work, arrives as the iconic group navigates evolving restrictions on corridos performances in Mexico while continuing to captivate audiences worldwide.
The collaboration marks a importent moment for both artists. Tucanes de Tijuana, known for thier versatility spanning corridos, romantic ballads, and cumbias, have maintained a devoted fanbase for decades, recently performing for over 100,000 people. The inclusion of Chalino Sánchez, a beloved figure tragically killed in 1993, adds a layer of reverence for a foundational artist in the corrido genre. “As the composer of ‘La Chona,’ it’s such an honor and a privilege to see it still going strong,” stated a member of Tucanes de Tijuana, reflecting on the enduring power of their music, a sentiment echoed in their approach to honoring Campos.
The release comes amidst increased scrutiny and restrictions on corridos in Mexico, prompting adjustments to the band’s performances. “We love corridos, but we also respect the rules in every place we perform,” explained a band representative. “The problem isn’t with corridos themselves; there are broader social issues at play.” At a recent show in guadalajara, the band adhered to a ban on corridos, substituting with popular tracks like “La Chona,” “El Tucanazo,” and “Me Gusta Vivir de Noche.”
Despite these limitations, Tucanes de Tijuana’s global reach continues to expand. The band is currently touring South America, with upcoming performances in Chile,Colombia,Honduras,Guatemala, and Bolivia, and has plans to bring their music to Spain next year. “Europe is becoming such an significant market for regional Mexican music,” they noted. The enduring appeal, they believe, lies in their diverse repertoire and connection with multiple generations. “I think we’ve earned the love of our fans through our music and the way we are… It’s such a blessing.”
