Montreal is considering a significant expansion of its photo radar program, perhaps dwarfing the current provincial total. The proposal, spearheaded by Projet Montréal, comes as the city seeks greater ⁤control over ⁢road safety measures.

Radar Impact & Current Status

Currently, Montreal utilizes only eight speed cameras.According to the ‌political party, areas equipped with these devices have experienced a 42% reduction in collisions.

In February 2024, Montreal officials formally requested the Quebec government grant the city authority to independently determine the number and placement of photo⁢ radars within its boundaries. Though, jurisdiction over these devices remains with the province.

As ‍of February 2024, the entire province⁢ of Quebec operated 52 photo radar installations.

Scale of Proposed Expansion

Sophie Mauzerolle, the mobility manager at the Montreal Executive Committee, stated in February 2024 that the‍ city encompasses approximately 800 school zones, with⁤ 100 of those located on major thoroughfares.

Projet Montréal’s plan⁤ would represent a ‌substantial increase ‍in the number of photo radars on the island of Montreal, potentially ⁢exceeding the total number currently deployed across the entire province.

Details ⁤regarding the precise scope of the proposed ‌expansion and the allocation ⁢of revenue generated from fines remain undisclosed.Projet Montréal has not ⁣yet released specific information on these aspects of the initiative.
