Trotting Legend Stefan Söderkvist Reflects on Illustrious Career
Swedish harness racing driver Stefan Söderkvist, who amassed an impressive 3,263 wins over his career, is enjoying retirement after decades in the sport. His career, marked by meaningful victories and partnerships with celebrated horses, has left a lasting impact on the Swedish trotting community.
Söderkvist’s first career victory came in 1975 with the horse Coretta, in a regular race at Dannero racetrack, located in the municipality of Höör, Skåne County. He quickly established himself as a force at Dannero, achieving a remarkable streak of five consecutive cousin championships from 1977 to 1981. These championships,a local tradition, highlighted his early talent and dedication.
While Söderkvist enjoyed success with numerous horses, he is most widely recognized for his association with Fridhem’s Ambra and Noras Bean, both of whom earned over SEK 12 million in their racing careers. These horses propelled him onto the international stage, allowing him to compete in prestigious events like the double elite race and the Prix d’Amérique.
How big was it for you personally to get the chance behind some of the world’s best horses?
– It was very vital and no man as a young guy thought was possible. Feeling the love of the Solvalla audience was huge and the Prix d’Amérique was also a memory for life. They took me out into the trot world.
the trotting world mourned the loss of both Fridhem’s Ambra and Noras Bean in the summer of 2023. Both horses passed away due to age-related complications, bringing an end to their celebrated lives.
– It felt. At the same time, I knew that both had a great life, concludes Stefan.
