Alcaraz and Sinner Set for US Open No.1 Battle
The battle for the World No. 1 ranking in the PIF ATP Live Rankings will intensify at the US Open, with Carlos Alcaraz poised to overtake Jannik Sinner as soon as the frist main draw match is played. Sinner is defending 2,000 points earned from his 2023 US Open title win.
Alcaraz, despite earning only 50 points in 2024 after a second-round loss to Botic van de Zandschulp, is positioned to reclaim the top spot. To retain his No. 1 ranking, Sinner must reach at least the third round of the tournament.
Sinner has demonstrated strong Grand Slam performance recently, reaching at least the quarter-finals in all Grand Slam events since his fourth-round loss at the 2023 US Open. He currently boasts a 21-match winning streak across the Australian Open and US Open hard-court majors, having won both events in 2024 and the Australian Open this year.
Alcaraz’s victory at the Cincinnati Open has given him direct control over his path to No. 1. A title win in New York would secure the ranking for the 22-year-old. Alternatively, if Sinner is eliminated in the third round or before, Alcaraz only needs to reach the second round to surpass him.
Alcaraz first achieved the World No. 1 ranking three years ago by winning his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, becoming the youngest-ever member of the ATP No. 1 Club at 19 years old.
Sinner begins his 64th week at No. 1,marking the fourth-longest consecutive run at the top for a first-time No. 1 player in ATP history.
