Auckland car Crash: 18-year-Old Charged in Teenager’s Death

Auckland,New zealand – August 7,2024 – An 18-year-old man has been formally charged following a fatal car crash in Coatesville,northwest Auckland,that claimed the life of 16-year-old Elliot New.

The incident occurred around 8:20 pm on June 27th when the vehicle struck a house off the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway. Elliot New, a passenger in the car, succumbed to his injuries in hospital on July 1st. Three other occupants of the vehicle were also injured and received hospital treatment.

Waitematā District Commander Superintendent Naila hassan announced today that investigators interviewed the alleged driver and subsequently laid seven charges, including dangerous driving causing death and driving under the influence of drugs where death has resulted.The man also faces a charge of failing to stop for flashing red and blue lights.

According to police, the vehicle involved failed to stop for officers “a short time earlier” before the crash. However, authorities confirmed that the vehicle was not being actively pursued at the time of the impact. The case is currently under review by the Self-reliant Police Conduct Authority (IPCA).

“Investigators subsequently charged an 18-year-old man with a range of offences, and he will appear in the North Shore District Court on August 20,” Superintendent Hassan stated. She also indicated that further charges may be filed as police inquiries continue.

“A critical incident inquiry also remains ongoing, as well as enquiries by the IPCA,” Hassan added. “We are continuing to support our people through the process,as well as to the families that have been impacted by the tragic events that Friday night.”
