Water Play After ‘Rabbit Eye’ Neglect Can Cause Vision Problems

Seoul, South KoreaHealth officials are urging vigilance against conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye, as cases rise during the summer months. While frequently enough a minor inconvenience, untreated conjunctivitis can lead to more serious corneal complications.

According to Dr. Kim Dong-hyun, an ophthalmologist at Korea University Hospital in Anam, Seoul, many people underestimate the potential severity of conjunctivitis. “It’s frequently dismissed as a mild, self-limiting illness, but persistent or worsening symptoms warrant a consultation with an eye care specialist to prevent potential inflammation or damage to the cornea,” dr. Kim stated.

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. Common symptoms include redness, itching, tearing, and a gritty sensation. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, allergies, or irritants.

Dr.Kim emphasized the importance of proactive eye health maintenance. “Prioritizing eye health is just as crucial as other aspects of overall wellness,” he explained. Simple preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of contracting conjunctivitis and ensure a healthy summer.

These preventative measures include frequent handwashing, avoiding touching the eyes, and practicing good hygiene when using shared items like towels, pillows, and bedding. Properly laundering these items at high temperatures can help eliminate potential pathogens. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and prevention (KCDC) recommends washing bedding weekly in hot water (at least 60°C or 140°F).

The KCDC reported a 15% increase in reported conjunctivitis cases in the frist two weeks of july compared to the same period last year, particularly among children aged 5-12. They attribute this rise to increased outdoor activities and potential exposure to allergens.

Individuals experiencing symptoms of conjunctivitis are advised to avoid wearing contact lenses and to refrain from sharing eye makeup or personal items. Over-the-counter artificial tears can provide temporary relief from discomfort. If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours or are accompanied by pain, vision changes, or sensitivity to light, medical attention should be sought instantly.
