Paderne Castle in Portugal will once again serve as a stunning backdrop for the annual Perseid meteor shower, one of the most spectacular astronomical events of the year. This captivating phenomenon occurs when tiny dust particles enter Earth’s atmosphere at incredible speeds, creating brilliant streaks of light often referred to as “shooting stars.”

While scientifically explained, the Perseid meteor shower continues to inspire a sense of wonder and is deeply rooted in folklore. Popular traditions frequently enough link meteors to wishes and omens, leading to the shower’s alternative name, “Tears of St. Lourenço,” commemorating the saint celebrated on August 10th.

The municipality of Albufeira will host “Astronomical Observation-Perseids 2025” on August 13th, from 8:30 PM to midnight. This event, organized by the Archeology Municipal Museum, offers a unique possibility to experience the shower away from city lights, within the tranquil setting of the Algarve’s Barrocal region. The event blends science and culture, promising a memorable evening for all attendees.

This year’s event will feature Oleh Malyi, an astronomer affiliated with the European Southern observatory. Malyi will utilize a high-precision telescope to guide participants on a journey through the cosmos,exploring planets,stars,and other celestial wonders. Attendees will gain insights into the mysteries of the universe.

Adding to the enchanting atmosphere, the duo Symbiosis will perform a musical set within the Castle Chapel. Formed in 2014, Symbiosis uniquely combines the classical elegance of the violin, played by Lilia Donkova, with the folk-inspired sounds of the accordion, performed by Gonçalo Hayed. Donkova, a member of the Cascais and oeiras Chamber Orchestra, is a highly acclaimed artist with numerous awards and scholarships. Hayed,a PhD in Music and Musicology,is a leading Portuguese accordionist,currently directing the Department of Music at the University of Évora and researching at CESEM.
