Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – Al-Ahly Club has appointed Mohamed Massad, a former star player, as an assistant coach to German head coach matthias Jaissle, according to sources at Al-Riyadiah. The move strengthens Al-Ahly’s technical staff ahead of the upcoming Saudi super Cup.

Massad, 42, will begin his duties following the conclusion of Jaissle’s four-day leave granted to players after the team’s external preparation camp. His appointment was facilitated by both his expressed desire to return to the club and jaissle’s approval. The Saudi Football Association now mandates that all clubs in the Roshan League include at least one Saudi assistant coach on their technical staff.

The former midfielder enjoyed a distinguished 12-season career with Al-Ahly between 2001 and 2013, punctuated by a brief loan spell with al Hilal.Following his retirement, Massad transitioned into coaching, initially leading Al-Ahly’s under-23 team. He afterward served as an assistant coach to Christian Gross, Saleh Al-Muhammadi, and Vladan milojević with the first team, and also coached the Saudi national under-20 team.

Al-Ahly will open its Saudi Super Cup campaign against Al-Qadisiyah on August 20th, marking the beginning of Massad’s tenure with the team.

The Rise of Saudi Football and Emphasis on Local Coaching Talent

The appointment of Mohamed Massad reflects a broader trend within Saudi Arabian football: a concerted effort to develop local coaching talent. Recent investments in the Roshan Saudi League have attracted international stars and managers, but the Saudi Football Association’s mandate for Saudi assistant coaches underscores a commitment to nurturing domestic expertise. This strategy aims to create a sustainable pipeline of qualified saudi coaches who can contribute to the long-term growth of the sport within the Kingdom.

Historically, Saudi football has relied heavily on foreign coaches. However, the current emphasis on local growth is intended to foster a deeper understanding of the Saudi game and culture, ultimately leading to more effective coaching strategies. The inclusion of experienced former players like Massad, who have a strong connection to the club and its fanbase, is seen as a crucial element of this initiative.
