Joby Aviation & ANA Expand Partnership, Aim for 2025 Japan Air Taxi Launch
SAN CARLOS, CA & TOKYO, JAPAN – June 11, 2025 – Joby Aviation, a leading developer of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, and All Nippon airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline, today announced a notable expansion of their partnership, solidifying plans to launch commercial air taxi services in Japan as early as 2025. This builds upon a previously established collaboration focused on bringing Joby’s eVTOL technology to the Japanese market.
The expanded agreement will see ANA leverage its extensive operational experience and maintenance network to support Joby’s aircraft operations in Japan.Specifically, ANA will provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for joby’s eVTOL fleet, ensuring the aircraft remain in peak condition for safe and reliable passenger transport. ANA will also assist with the advancement of vertiport infrastructure – the dedicated landing and charging locations for eVTOL aircraft – and contribute to navigating the complex regulatory landscape for urban air mobility in Japan.
This partnership is a key component of Joby’s strategy to establish a robust air taxi network. joby is currently working towards certification of its aircraft with both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the United States and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) in Japan. The company anticipates that its eVTOL aircraft will offer a faster, quieter, and more lasting option to traditional ground transportation in congested urban areas.
the urban air mobility (UAM) market is rapidly evolving, with potential applications ranging from airport transfers and commuter travel to emergency services and cargo delivery. joby’s aircraft are designed to carry a pilot and four passengers, with a range of 150 miles. The company is focused on developing a network that will initially serve key urban routes, with plans to expand as the market matures. However, the realization of these plans is subject to a number of risks and uncertainties. These include the successful launch of the air taxi service, the growth of the UAM market, the ability to manufacture aircraft meeting performance expectations on schedule, navigating the complexities of foreign market certification, competitive pressures, future funding requirements, intellectual property protection, evolving regulations, and reliance on third-party suppliers. Further details regarding these risks are outlined in Joby Aviation’s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), including its Form 10-K filed on February 27, 2025, and Form 10-Q filed on May 8, 2025.
