The Prague Museum of Karel Zeman has launched a special program commemorating the anniversary of the beloved film, ‘Journey to Prehistoric Times.’ The program features an exploration of filmmaking techniques and an engaging thematic game designed to captivate audiences of all ages. younger children can embark on a revelation of the prehistoric world through interactive tasks, while older children and adults can test thier knowledge with the “Filmosaurs” game.

‘Journey to prehistoric Times,’ directed by Karel Zeman, premiered on August 5, 1955, and was profoundly inspired by the illustrations of Zdeněk Burian. Burian’s work was created in collaboration with paleontologist Josef Augusta, ensuring scientific accuracy alongside artistic vision. The film quickly became a landmark achievement in czech and international cinema.

According to film critic Jan Beránek, “Karel Zeman managed to create a work with a monumental impact with limited means. His revolutionary combination of puppet animation, illustrations, and live actors pushed the boundaries of filmmaking and inspired creators worldwide.”

The film’s impact extended far beyond its initial release. It introduced generations of children to the wonders of Earth’s ancient past, bringing prehistoric plants and animals to life through innovative trick photography. The story follows four boys who travel back in time, meticulously documenting their encounters with prehistoric life in a diary.Over 30 species of prehistoric animals were vividly realized through Zeman’s techniques, even influencing Steven Spielberg during the production of ‘Jurassic Park.’ The film achieved international success, being sold to 72 countries.

Reflecting on his work, Karel zeman once stated, “Today I wonder where I found the courage to start almost with my bare hands into such an unusual project. As a director, I had to suppress the dramatic storyline to have enough space for scientific interpretation, as an artist I had to stick to a realistic concept, again in the interest of science. All imagination possibilities of the film, so I combined the film feature, cartoon and puppet in one whole.” Zeman passed away on april 5, 1989, at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy of cinematic innovation.

In May 2019, Zeman’s daughter, ludmila Zemanová, christened an audiobook version of ‘Journey to Prehistoric Times’ at the Karel Zeman Museum. The audiobook features narration by Oldřich Kaiser, who served as one of the audiobook’s godfathers. That same year, a restored version of the film was re-released in cinemas after 64 years, thanks to the “We clean the world of fantasy AU” project.
