Georgina Gharsallah ‘went to the shops and we never saw her again – seven years later, we still want answers’

Worthing Mother’s Desperate Search for Missing Daughter Enters Seventh Year

Seven years have passed since Georgina Gharshallah vanished from her hometown of Worthing, leaving her family in a state of agonizing uncertainty. Despite extensive police efforts and her mother’s relentless campaigning, her whereabouts remain a complete mystery.

A Normal Morning Turns to Disappearance

On March 7, 2018, Georgina Gharshallah, then 30, embarked on what seemed like an ordinary day. She left her family home with plans to fix her phone, visit the job centre, and meet her father. Her last confirmed sighting was at a local shop at 9:50 am.

Andrea Gharshallah, Georgina‘s mother, recounted the unsettling details of their last morning together. “Straightening her hair and complaining about her broken phone charger, Georgina’s last morning with her daughter in March 2018 had been unremarkable,” Andrea told The Independent.

Andrea expressed her bewilderment at her daughter’s sudden disappearance. “It’s a complete mystery,” she stated. “I was never aware of her having any feuds with anyone. She never mentioned anything going on, and if she had owed someone money, she would have asked me.”

Unanswered Questions and Mounting Frustration

Georgina, described as a passionate cook and devoted mother to two boys, had experienced personal challenges including social anxiety and bulimia in her later years. However, her family had no indication that she would disappear without a trace after leaving her home.

Her phone disconnected from the network, and her bank accounts remained untouched, deepening the mystery. Initially, Andrea wasn’t overly concerned, knowing Georgina sometimes stayed with friends or her ex-partner without immediate notification. However, the lack of contact, especially after missing appointments with her children, triggered alarm bells.

Weeks later, the discovery that Georgina‘s bank accounts had not been used was a chilling confirmation that something was seriously wrong. “All the time I had been listening out for her footsteps coming up the footpath and up the stairs,” Andrea recalled. “We lived waiting for that, waiting for her to turn up – but it never happened. It took a very long time for me to accept that maybe she had come to harm.”

Inquiries and Public Appeals

The family’s interaction with the police faced hurdles, with changes in case handlers causing confusion. A potential sighting on CCTV of Georgina with another woman on Chapel Road was later withdrawn by police due to uncertainty, adding to the family’s distress.

Andrea voiced concerns about the perceived lack of media attention and resources dedicated to her daughter’s case compared to others. “I’d see cases across the UK becoming high profile in a day or two, and I would email the police and say, ‘how come a girl in Yorkshire has drones and searches and police teams?’,” she lamented. “If Georgina had been a blonde, blue-eyed girl who worked in Barclays, she would have had more attention.”

Sussex Police maintain they have conducted thorough searches, including using specialist teams in areas like Teville Gate. A spokesperson stated, “We have conducted multiple physical searches as part of our efforts to find out what happened to Georgina. This includes the use of specialist search teams and equipment to carry out rigorous tests of sites near where Georgina went missing… However, to date, nothing has been found that would help progress our investigation.”

The force also confirmed participation in TV interviews and following up on over 100 potential sightings. While the case is now registered as a no-body homicide, Andrea refuses to declare her daughter deceased without concrete evidence.

A Mother’s Enduring Hope

The disappearance of Claudia Lawrence‘s father, who died without knowing what happened to his daughter, deeply impacted Andrea. “It really brought it home to me that he died and never knew what had happened,” she said. “That must be awful, spending the rest of your life trying to find answers and living for your child’s case. I think that’s my biggest fear now, coming to the end of my life and never knowing.”

The case of missing persons in the UK highlights the ongoing challenges faced by families. In 2023, over 160,000 people were reported missing in the UK, with many cases remaining unresolved (Missing People, 2023).

Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme acknowledged the family’s pain. “Her family and friends are understandably desperate for answers, and I share their frustrations that despite exhaustive efforts, we do not know what happened to her on that day in 2018,” he stated. “Our investigation’s priority is to get to the truth of what happened to Georgina and bring a conclusion to all of these years of waiting for her loved ones.”
