Weather: Summer returns – up to 33 degrees expected

Summer Heat Returns as Rain Eases

Temperatures to Soar into the Thirties by Week’s End

Following a persistently wet July, a significant shift is on the horizon as summery conditions, and even heatwaves, are forecast to grip the region from the latter half of the week.

Regional Forecast: A Gradual Warming Trend

On Monday, expect increasing cloud cover across northern and eastern areas. While western regions will see intermittent sunshine, showers are possible, particularly in higher elevations. Early temperatures will range from eight to 15 degrees Celsius, climbing to highs of 18 to 25 degrees, with the warmest readings in the southeast.

Tuesday promises more sunshine, though scattered clouds may appear. By the evening, some rain showers could develop in the Waldviertel. Morning temperatures will be between ten and 16 degrees, surging to 24 to 29 degrees in the afternoon, peaking in Burgenland and eastern Weinviertel, including Vienna.

Mid-Week Conditions and Weekend Outlook

Wednesday will see lingering clouds along the northern Alps and in the south and southeast, giving way to predominantly sunny weather. Shower activity is expected to be minimal, though the southern side of the Alps might experience isolated downpours. Overnight lows will be ten to 17 degrees, with daytime highs reaching 22 to 27 degrees.

Heatwave Approaching

Thursday’s forecast indicates a return to sunny conditions, with only a few clouds drifting through the west. Mountainous areas could see isolated showers developing. Overnight lows are predicted between nine and 17 degrees, with afternoon temperatures expected to reach 26 to 30 degrees, touching the 30-degree mark in some locales.

Friday is set to be hot and sunny throughout the region. While cloud fields should remain scattered and harmless for many, the mountainous terrain may experience afternoon heat showers. Morning temperatures will be eleven to 18 degrees, with afternoon highs soaring to 28 to 33 degrees, signalling a return to true summer heat.

This shift towards higher temperatures aligns with typical summer patterns. For instance, average August high temperatures in Vienna hover around 25-26 degrees Celsius, according to the Austrian Meteorological Society (ZAMG, 2023).
