Southern Tamil Nadu Emerges as Startup Hotspot, Driven by IT, Agri, and Food Innovation
Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu – The southern districts of Tamil Nadu, especially the thoothukudi and Nellai hubs, are witnessing a meaningful surge in entrepreneurial activity, with Details Technology (IT) leading the charge.out of approximately 500 startups identified in the region, IT accounts for 88 ventures, followed by the food sector with 40, agriculture with 34, and construction with 31. Healthcare startups number 26, with emerging sectors like renewable energy (18), fintech (14), Artificial Intelligence (AI) (11), and aerospace and defense (7) also showing promising growth.
This burgeoning ecosystem is characterized by ventures that leverage the region’s inherent strengths. Sivarajah, an expert observing these trends, notes that while metropolitan areas like Chennai and Bengaluru naturally attract IT startups, southern districts are not far behind. “A lot of agri, food-related, and B2C startups are from southern districts,” Sivarajah explains. “These ideas are rooted in the region’s strengths. We try to support them through mentorship and investor linkages.”
A prime example of this regional focus is Caruvadu, a startup founded by mechanical engineer Joseph Cascarno. Cascarno returned to his hometown to modernize his family’s three-generation-old dried seafood business. “Earlier, the process was traditional. We wanted to change that,” stated Cascarno. After two years of research and progress,Caruvadu has developed a hygienic,solar-dried,and contamination-free system for processing seafood. The company has established a robust Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for handling and packing fresh fish and is now operating as a Business-to-Consumer (B2C) brand. With support from StartupTN, Caruvadu is also exploring a franchise model, aiming to establish physical stores in multiple cities.
Women entrepreneurs are also making a substantial impact on the southern startup landscape. Of the 500 startups, a significant 232 are led by women. DeepCycle Hub, an e-waste management company co-founded by Deepthi and her husband, exemplifies this trend. “We wanted to tackle the e-waste problem at source, and since we are from Thoothukudi, we decided to start here,” said Deepthi. the duo received a Rs 10 lakh seed grant after pitching their idea at Puththozhil Kalam, a social startup initiative launched by Member of Parliament Kanimozhi. this funding enabled the creation of PARI (Public Access Recycling Infrastructure), a system featuring iot-enabled smart bins equipped with sensors to monitor waste levels and contamination. Deepthi elaborated on the system’s objectives: “The goal is to raise awareness among sanitary workers, track e-waste volumes, and ensure proper recycling.” These smart bins are slated for installation across Thoothukudi.
While Thoothukudi may not yet resemble a conventional global startup hub, its strategic focus on sectors like space technology, marine, and logistics, capitalizing on its inherent strengths, is paving the way for future growth. Across the southern districts, the concept of entrepreneurship is steadily becoming more accessible and viable.
