Smoking Increases Diabetes Risk: A Growing Concern in Diabetics

French Federation of Diabetics Launches Pilot Program to Combat Smoking in Diabetic Population

The French Federation of Diabetics (FFD), in collaboration with the SFD (Société Francophone du Diabète), SFT (Société Francophone de Tabacologie), and FFD (Fédération Française des Diabétiques), is actively addressing the critical link between smoking and diabetes. A mixed working group,”Smoking and Diabetes,” is currently engaging individuals with diabetes who also smoke, aiming to educate them about the associated risks and provide support for smoking cessation.Audrey Namur, Network strategy and prevention Manager at the FFD, highlighted the initiative’s importance.

This comprehensive program is being piloted in six French departments: Marne, Bas-Rhin, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Haute-Garonne, and Loire-Atlantique. The FFD’s federated associations are integral to its implementation. The program offers tailored assistance to diabetic smokers through a structured approach: two group workshops held three months apart, followed by a supportive telephone call one month later to reinforce motivation and track progress. These workshops are co-facilitated by tobacco addiction specialists and diabetes experts, creating a collaborative habitat designed to encourage and facilitate smoking cessation.

Global Health Imperative: Tobacco Use and Diabetes Management

Professor Durlach emphasized the world Health Association’s (WHO) 2023 directive, underscoring the diabetogenic nature of smoking and the paramount importance of prioritizing smoking cessation for individuals with diabetes. The WHO’s message is twofold: primary prevention by discouraging smoking in individuals at risk of diabetes, and urgent intervention for those who are both diabetic and smokers. Professor Durlach stated, “This is what diabetes caregivers must address.”
