Gremlins 3 Update: Spielberg’s Involvement and Script Status

A potential third installment of the “Gremlins” film franchise is reportedly in development, with original star Zach Galligan suggesting a script has been completed and is awaiting executive producer Steven Spielberg‘s approval. Warner Bros. is said to be “incredibly interested” in moving forward with “Gremlins 3,” according to Galligan, who starred as Billy Peltzer in the 1984 original and its 1990 sequel.

Galligan shared this update with an audience, stating, “After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script.” He further indicated that the project’s progression hinges on Spielberg’s review and sign-off, attributing the studio’s renewed interest to the recent box office success of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”

Warner Bros. released “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in September 2024,achieving a worldwide gross of $452 million. The film, like the original “Gremlins,” is a well-regarded classic from the 1980s, directed by Tim Burton.

The “Gremlins” franchise has already expanded beyond its two films with various video games and a recent animated series. Titled “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” for its first season and “Gremlins: The Wild Batch” for its second, the series premiered on HBO Max in 2023, with new episodes concluding in april of this year.Galligan lent his voice to the animated series in a recurring guest role.

This news follows a statement made by Warner Bros. pictures co-chief Pam Abdy in an April interview with Deadline.Abdy mentioned that the studio was collaborating with Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment on “developing new entries in the ‘Gremlins’ and ‘Goonies’ franchises.” Earlier this year, it was reported that Potsy Ponciroli was attached to write the script for “Goonies 2,” with Spielberg set to produce.

As of now, Warner Bros. has not officially announced a writer or director for “Gremlins 3.” The original “Gremlins” was a critically important box office success, grossing $212 million worldwide and notably contributing to the establishment of the PG-13 rating alongside Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” Its sequel, while less financially successful with $41 million, has since gained a cult following.
