Italy Braces for Severe Storms on July 28th
Cyclone Threatens Widespread Thunderstorms and Hail
A potent cyclone is set to unleash severe weather across Italy on Monday, July 28th, with heavy thunderstorms, intense rainfall, and potential hail expected in multiple regions. Authorities are urging caution as the weather system deepens, bringing a risk of significant disruptions.
Regions at Highest Risk
The most severe conditions are forecast for Veneto, Romagna, Marche, and Abruzzo. These areas are likely to experience violent thunderstorms capable of causing widespread damage and significant inconveniences. There is also a possibility of supercells forming, bringing large hail and strong winds.
Marche, in particular, faces a heightened risk of flash floods, with predictions of over 100 millimeters of rain falling within a few hours. The central-south regions, including Tuscany, Lazio, and Campania, can also anticipate heavy showers.
Weather System Details
The cyclone’s low-pressure center is expected to remain over central Italy for most of the day, intensifying the adverse weather. This system will be accompanied by strong northerly winds affecting over half the country, amplifying the perception of deteriorating conditions.
The northwest and the extreme south are anticipated to be relatively spared. However, brief showers are still possible in these areas. Piedmont and most of Lombardy are expected to enjoy a calmer Monday.

The Italian weather service emphasizes that summer phenomena can be particularly intense due to high atmospheric energy levels. For context, severe weather events in Italy have caused significant economic impact; for instance, hailstorms in 2023 damaged an estimated 10,000 hectares of agricultural land, costing hundreds of millions of euros (ANSA, July 18, 2023).
Outlook for Tuesday
Conditions are expected to improve from the afternoon of Tuesday, July 29th. Nevertheless, scattered showers may persist in central and southern Italy.
