salaspils, latvia – A catastrophic fire ripped through a row house on Raina Street in Salaspils yesterday, leaving one resident dead and several others, including a firefighter, injured. The blaze, described by witnesses as an “apocalyptic view,” forced the near-total evacuation of the building, with many residents escaping with onyl the clothes on thier backs.

The inferno broke out around midnight, with residents awoken by the smell of smoke. As flames engulfed the structure, a desperate scene unfolded. Neighbors rushed to assist, with one resident, Robert, recounting his efforts to help those trapped inside.

“I saw smoke from a distance and grabbed my ladder to help,” Robert stated. “People were running around in a panic. Someone was yelling from the second floor that they couldn’t get out.”

A plea for help came from an elderly woman trapped on the attic floor. Neighbors urged her to jump, but she reportedly stated she couldn’t. Efforts were made to reach her with a ladder, but tragically, she no longer responded to calls for help and perished in the flames. Her remains were still being recovered this morning.

Igor Dārziņš, Commander of the 8th Unit of the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD), confirmed the grim discovery.”Unfortunately, a person was found under the debris on the attic floor,” he said. “We cannot access the area due to the collapse of the intermediate floors.”

The fire also claimed a resident who suffered from smoke inhalation, receiving on-site medical attention. A firefighter was hospitalized after sustaining an injury when a floor collapsed during the rescue operation.

The cause of the devastating fire remains under investigation by the State Police. While residents speculated about the origins, with some social media posts suggesting arson linked to gambling debts and drug activity, official findings are pending expert analysis. The scale of the destruction and the loss of life have left the community in shock.
