OpenAI’s most capable AI model, GPT-5, may be coming in August

OpenAI Prepares for GPT-5 Debut, Unifying AI Models

“Reasoning Alpha” Spotted as Testing Intensifies

References to “gpt-5-reasoning-alpha-2025-07-13” are surfacing online, indicating OpenAI’s advanced AI model is entering its final testing stages. Code snippets reveal configurations like “reasoning_effort: high,” suggesting rigorous evaluation by testers and security experts targeting potential vulnerabilities.

A Unified Vision for OpenAI’s AI Portfolio

The forthcoming GPT-5 aims to streamline OpenAI’s evolving product line. As detailed by **Sam Altman** earlier this year, the new model is slated to consolidate features from both established GPT series and the specialized reasoning-focused “o-series” into a singular, more powerful system.

Romain Huet, OpenAI’s Head of Developer Experience, recently stated the company’s ambition: “We’re truly excited to not just make a net new great frontier model, we’re also going to unify our two series. The breakthrough of reasoning in the O-series and the breakthroughs in multi-modality in the GPT-series will be unified, and that will be GPT-5.”

Reports from The Information suggest GPT-5 will excel in coding tasks and offer enhanced overall performance, blending capabilities from traditional models with those of specialized reasoning (SR) models like o3.

Open-Weights Model Faces Further Delays

Prior to GPT-5’s release, OpenAI intends to launch its first open-weights model since 2019’s GPT-2. This model, described as similar to “o3 mini” with reasoning abilities, will allow users with adequate hardware to run it locally. However, **Sam Altman** announced on July 11 that the release has been postponed due to the need for additional safety testing, noting, “We are not yet sure how long it will take us.”

AI Advancements Drive Industry Innovation

The increasing sophistication of AI models like GPT-5 is having a tangible impact. For instance, GitHub Copilot, powered by earlier OpenAI models, has been shown to increase developer productivity by an average of 55% in some studies.
