Police Investigate Deadly Accident
A tragic incident on Sunday morning saw a pedestrian fatally struck by a vehicle at a public transport stop in Kengarags, Riga. Authorities are actively working to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the fatality.
Early Morning Tragedy
The State Police confirmed that on July 20th, around 8:40 AM, a vehicle collided with a pedestrian at the bus stop located at 17 Prūšu Street in Riga. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations are ongoing.
Weekend Road Safety Concerns
The weekend proved to be particularly dangerous on Latvian roads. Last night alone, 80 traffic accidents were recorded across the country. These incidents resulted in 22 injuries across 16 separate crashes.
Vulnerable Road Users Impacted
Among those injured in the weekend’s accidents were two pedestrians, five cyclists, and one electric scooter operator, highlighting the risks faced by various road users.
Multi-Vehicle Collision in Sigulda
On Sunday afternoon, at approximately 4:37 PM, a collision involving a car and a truck occurred on the P10 road in Sigulda County. Rescuers utilized hydraulic tools to extract one individual trapped in a vehicle, who was then handed over to emergency medical services. Four other individuals had managed to exit their vehicle independently.
Impaired Driving Prosecutions
In separate incidents, three individuals are facing prosecution for driving under the influence of alcohol, with four others facing criminal liability for similar offenses. Additionally, one driver was apprehended for operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs, which also carries criminal consequences.
Speeding and Aggressive Driving Violations
Over the course of the day, 243 administrative violation reports were issued for exceeding speed limits. One driver was also cited for aggressive driving behavior.

Road safety remains a critical concern. In 2023, data from the European Transport Safety Council indicated that Latvia had a road fatality rate of 6.3 per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure that underscores the continued need for vigilance and enforcement.
