Egyptian Security Forces Neutralize Suspects in Cairo Raid, Foiling Alleged Terror Plot
Cairo, Egypt – Egyptian security forces have reportedly killed two suspects during a raid on a suspected militant hideout in a district near the capital’s center. The operation, aimed at disrupting the activities of the HASM movement, resulted in the death of a civilian passerby before the suspects were neutralized.
According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, the raid was prompted by intelligence indicating that the HASM movement, which Egypt designates as the armed wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, was preparing to resume its operations and carry out attacks targeting security and economic infrastructure.
The ministry identified five alleged leaders of the “conspiracy,” all reportedly members of HASM and previously sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for a series of attacks that followed the 2013 ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. The Muslim Brotherhood was subsequently outlawed, and thousands of its members were imprisoned.
The HASM movement, previously linked to assassination attempts and bombings between 2016 and 2019, had largely disappeared from public view. The Interior ministry further stated that one of the suspects killed in the recent operation had received advanced military training in a neighboring country.
Human rights organizations have noted that while President Abdel fattah Al-Sissi’s governance has emphasized a return to peace and security, a decade of stringent measures has considerably curtailed dissent.
