Montreal police say they arrested a pair of 19-year-olds in connection with two violent firearm-related incidents that took place in the last month – a homicide and a shootout.

Police made the arrests Wednesday, according to a news release sent out by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

One of the suspects was involved in the killing of a young man, also 19,in the Montréal-Nord borough on June 27,police say. His death marked the 18th homicide in montreal this year.

That night, police were called around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Maurice-duplessis Boulevard and Matte Avenue.

When they arrived, they found the victim with gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police say the suspect in that homicide and the other 19-year-old arrested Wednesday were then involved in a shootout two weeks later on July 11 in the Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles borough.

The two suspects were in a car with three other passengers at the intersection of Perras and Saint-Jean baptiste boulevards when they began exchanging gunfire with the occupants of another vehicle.

That second car, carrying four men, fled the scene and was later intercepted by Laval’s local police.

The two 19-year-old suspects fled their vehicle, according to the SPVM, leaving behind the other passengers.

Nobody was injured, said the SPVM spokesperson on duty that day,Caroline Chèvrefils.

Both suspects in connection with those events were charged Thursday at the Montreal courthouse.

One of them faces a first-degree murder charge, among others, while the second individual was charged with attempted murder.
