Transgender Athlete Barred from Competition, Alleges Discrimination
A transgender athlete was reportedly prevented from competing in two races despite registering and qualifying, leading to a complaint alleging discriminatory practices. The athlete, identified as Sadie Schreiner, claims she was informed 15 minutes before her race that her name had been removed from the official competitor list.
According to the complaint,Schreiner was directed to Leone Timing officials, including Mack and Keenan-Kirkpatrick,when she raised the issue. During their interaction, Keenan-Kirkpatrick allegedly stated, “I do not want to assume, but you are transgender.” The complaint further alleges that Keenan-Kirkpatrick suggested organizing a separate, segregated event for Schreiner to compete in,even after she provided documentation, including a birth certificate and driver’s license, recognizing her as female.
Schreiner has previously stated on her Instagram page that she was “barred” from participating in a February track event at Boston University as an unattached athlete. this incident reportedly followed a Trump governance order and an NCAA policy change that have impacted transgender athletes.
The broader context of this situation is the ongoing national debate surrounding the participation of transgender girls and women in sports. This issue has been a focal point for Republicans, who have framed it as a matter of athletic fairness. Over two dozen states have enacted legislation restricting transgender women and girls from competing in certain sports categories, though some of these policies have faced legal challenges and have been blocked by courts.
