Trump-City Feuds Offer Political Gains for Both Sides, Experts Say
Donald Trump appears to be leveraging conflicts with Democratic-led cities for political advantage, according to political science experts. This strategy, wich positions him as a counter-influence to cities that oppose his presidential vision, echoes tactics used in the 1980s and 90s by Republican-governed states against democratic cities.
The current dynamic is exemplified by the relationship between Trump and New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Experts suggest this pairing is mutually beneficial. Trump’s political strategists reportedly see Mamdani, described as young, Muslim, and left-wing, as an ideal figure to oppose. Conversely, Mamdani can capitalize on Trump’s general unpopularity in New york by drawing comparisons, which he believes benefits his political standing. This dynamic is expected to led to ongoing political sparring,as it serves the interests of both individuals.
In a separate but related point, a legal expert noted that the re-imposition of a control board for D.C. may no longer be necessary, as the city’s finances are now overseen by a chief financial officer who effectively functions as a “one-person control board.”
