Arrests Made After Brush Fire Near Buildings in Laukvik
Witnesses quickly extinguished the blaze before authorities arrived
Two individuals were arrested in Laukvik, Vågan municipality, after witnesses reported them for allegedly starting a fire in a grassy, heather-filled area. The quick action of witnesses prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
Witness Report Leads to Arrests
According to operations manager Veronica H. Nylund, the police were alerted after witnesses observed the two suspects igniting the grass and heather. “There were a message from witnesses who observed that the two had lit the grass/heather in the area,”
Nylund told VG.
The blaze occurred close to buildings, but fortunately, witnesses extinguished it rapidly. Firefighters also responded to the scene. Following witness accounts, police arrested the two individuals.
Ongoing Investigation
Nylund noted that there have been several fires reported recently in the area, but further investigation is needed to determine if they are related. According to the National Fire Protection Association, most wildfires are human-caused. (NFPA)
The Svolvær Police Chamber is handling the continued investigation. As of now, the suspects have not been questioned. Police have gathered evidence from the scene.
