The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Saturday (12) that the European Union could adopt “proportional contracted” to 30% of the United States announced by Donald Trump this morning.
“We will take all the necessary measures to safeguard the interests of the European Union, including the adoption of proportional contracted, if necessary,” he said in a statement.
Moments earlier, Trump announced the 30% tax on products from the EU and urged the block to allow “full and open access to the US market without any fare to be charged.”
According to the Republican, the EU has had years to discuss with the White House American commercial trade deficits in the trade balance and, therefore, the new taxation will come into force on August 1 if there is no deal in the coming days.
In response, von der Leyen said the European Union has prioritized a quick solution with the United States and will continue to work for consensus until the stipulated date.
The bloc leader also stressed that imposing a 30% rate on European products would interrupt essential transatlantic supply chains and that “few economies in the world reach the level of opening and adherence to fair business practices such as the European Union.”
