In the coming years, large -scale residential areas will have to rise in the vicinity of Alkmaar, Hengelo/Enschede, Apeldoorn and Helmond. That is stated in the new Space Memorandum, an important plan stating what the Netherlands will look like in the coming decades.
At least 3500 new homes must be available at every location, is the plan. The central government manages these new construction projects, writes outgoing minister Mona Keijzer (Housing).
In the Space Memorandum, important choices are made about the design of the Netherlands in the coming decades. The memorandum will be discussed on Friday in the Council of Ministers, but is already in the hands of RTL News.
The four new locations will be located at the seventeen major construction sites that have already been designated by the previous cabinet.
Urbanization

In a number of other regions, which are still relatively quiet, the government wants to focus on urbanization by stimulating the economy and construction of new homes in these areas. These are the Frisian cities, the head of Noord-Holland, Harderwijk-Zeewolde, Southeast Drenthe and the Zeeland cities.
These areas need an impulse, because otherwise they are no longer attractive enough and further empty. In the future, ‘restructuring’, another word for demolition-new construction, will also take place to renew the housing stock.
In the coming years, these regions can also count on them being selected more often as a location for new construction of defense, or large -scale energy projects.
“For example, barracks and the construction of power plants bring a new demand for homes and support services in Zeewolde and Vlissingen,” the Space Memorand is described. “With targeted investments we give an extra boost to regional urbanization ambitions.”
Transport of hazardous substances
The memorandum also makes the promise that the transport of hazardous substances such as hydrogen and ammonia in the future should be done as much as possible via new pipelines to be constructed. This is to prevent trains from having to run with fire -hazardous substances through residential areas, as is the case now.
“The empire facilitates the Delta Rhine Corridor to realize new underground infrastructure between the port of Rotterdam and the border with Germany, near Venlo. A hydrogen and two CO2 pipes will be realized towards 2033.”
Business parks
In the new Space Memorandum, Keijzer also praises the 3800 industrial sites that our country has. She wants business sites that are swallowed up by housing ‘where necessary’. “If possible locally and otherwise regionally.”
