The very first and iconic Birkin bag was sold at an auction in Paris for around 7 million euros. According to auction house Sotheby’s, it is therefore the most expensive handbag ever at an auction.
With all the costs of the auction house there, the buyer from Japan must 8.6 million euros Tickle, reports Sotheby’s. Bidding took barely 10 minutes and the price quickly ran out considerably. The auction house had expected the bag to yield a few tons in advance.
The auction house calls the bag a timeless cultural icon. “The bag is indispensable for the red carpet, has a permanent place in fashion magazines and is a coveted item in the wardrobe of celebrities.”

It is about the first edition of the popular handbag of the fashion brand Hermès. The bag was specially made by Hermès in 1984 for the now deceased French singer and fashion icon Jane Birkin. Just below the closure are also its initials: JB
Head Handbags At the Auction House, Morgane Halimi, the bag calls a “piece of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon”. According to Halimi, the bag radiates luxury in the most refined way. “Unbelievable that a bag originally designed by Hermès as a practical accessory for Jane Birkin, has become the most desirable bag in history,” said Halimi.
It is the first copy of the bag line that then grew into the world’s most exclusive handbag. Buyers must have a good relationship with sales staff and an earlier purchase history at Hermès have offered one of the commercial versions of the bag by the fashion house.
Depending on the materials used, the price rises from a few tens of thousands of euros to a few hundred thousand euros.
