HAS Saint-Michel-l’Observatoirein Alpes-de-Haute-Provencethe conquest of the sky could now soon be carried out through an extraordinary mirror.
In a few years, a giant telescope 2.50 meters in diameter will rise under the renovated dome of The Haute-Provence Observatory (OHP). A colossal instrument, fruit of the Providence project, designed to scrutinize both the nearby space – that of satellites and space traffic – and the distant space, populated by asteroids, planets and cosmic phenomena.
Piloted by theNational Office for Aerospace Studies and Research (Onera), a public establishment under the supervision of the Ministry of Defense, the Providence project embodies the double vocation of the organization: protect and explore. “”We are 2,000 people distributed throughout Francerecalls Thierry Fusco, research director at Onera and scientific manager of the project. Our mission is to be an expert for the State, to do research and to help industries“.
