EU Invests €2.8 Billion in Sustainable Transport

Funding targets rail, port, and infrastructure projects across Europe.

The European Union is allocating €2.8 billion across 94 projects to bolster sustainable and interconnected mobility throughout Europe. Investments aim to modernize transport networks and promote environmentally friendly solutions.

Rail Infrastructure Upgrades

Several rail projects have been selected to receive funding under the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). These projects aim to improve cross-border connections and upgrade existing infrastructure. For example, in Croatia, the EC is set to grant 37 million euros for various transport projects.

Port Development Initiatives

**Dunkirk** and **Rosslare** Ports will receive €19.2 million to enhance sustainable infrastructure. This funding will support upgrades that improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. These investments come as maritime transport faces increasing pressure to decarbonize, with the International Maritime Organization setting targets to reduce emissions by at least 40% by 2030 (IMO 2023).

Slovakia Modernizes Transportation

**Slovakia**’s Minister of Transport announced the country has received over 141 million euros from the EU to modernize its transport sector. This funding will be used to improve roadways, railways and other critical infrastructure components.

Connecting Europe

The CEF Transport program supports projects that contribute to the development of a high-performing, sustainable, and interconnected trans-European transport network. These investments are crucial for facilitating trade, tourism, and economic growth across the continent.
