New Talk Show Sparks Internal Debate at BNNVARA

A change in the late-night talk show host lineup at BNNVARA has ignited a conversation about diversity. The decision to replace Sophie Hilbrand with Tim de Wit, a white man, has triggered internal dissent and raised questions about the broadcaster’s commitment to representation.

The Controversy Unfolds

BNNVARA, known for emphasizing diversity, faced criticism when it selected Tim de Wit to co-host “Pauw & De Wit.” Sources say the internal reaction has been strong. Amber Kortzorg, formerly of OP1, expressed frustration, even considering resigning, stating the choice “will not unite” after years of diversity advocacy.

Voices of Concern

Amber Kortzorg, according to reports, believes a Black woman should have been chosen. She stated that she “could have been” the presenter, but would have preferred “a woman, preferably in color.” A letter expressing these concerns has been sent to management, and other BNNVARA employees have voiced their opinions.

In 2023, only 41% of the top-paid on-screen roles in television were held by women, highlighting the need for more diverse representation (Source: MediaWatch).

BNNVARA’s Response

BNNVARA acknowledged receiving the letter and stated that they discussed the selection internally, emphasizing the importance of representation. Jeroen Pauw, when asked about the matter, said he wasn’t aware of the letter, noting his lack of involvement in human resources. He did, however, acknowledge the need for female voices in the talk show and highlighted efforts to include women as guests.

Pauw also noted that NPO has two evening talk shows, with one hosted by two women and the other by two men.
