Juliana Marins,a 26-year-old Brazilian tourist,has died after falling into a ravine on Mount Rinjani,located on Lombok Island in West nusa Tenggara,Indonesia. The Brazilian government and Indonesia’s search and rescue agency confirmed her death on Tuesday following a multi-day search operation.
Search and Rescue Efforts hampered by Conditions
Marins went missing on saturday while hiking on the volcano. Attempts to locate and evacuate her were considerably challenged by adverse weather conditions and the difficult terrain. Authorities initially spotted her body, which appeared motionless, using a drone.
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry released a statement expressing deep sadness over the tragic event: “The Brazilian government informs, with deep sadness, the death of the Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, who had fallen from a cliff surrounding the trail near the crater of Mount Rinjani.”
Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) teams worked for four days, facing adverse weather, terrain, and visibility challenges, before recovering Marins’ body.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva conveyed his condolences, stating he received the news of Marins’ death “with great sadness.” He added, “Our diplomatic and consular services in Indonesia will continue to provide full support to her family at this time of great pain,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Mohammad syafii, head of Basarnas, stated that rescuers planned to evacuate the body on Wednesday morning, weather permitting. “One of the rescuers managed to reach the victim at the depth of 600 meters. Upon checking, there were no signs of life,” he told reporters. “Three rescuers got closer to the victim and confirmed she has died.”
An Instagram account providing updates from the Marins family, which gained over 1.5 million followers during the search, confirmed the news on Tuesday evening: “Today, the rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was. With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive. We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support that we have received.”
