Australia’s EV Push at Risk Without Tax Breaks

Australia’s efforts to reduce transport emissions are at risk. The nation may stall without a reintroduction of tax breaks and other incentives for electric and hybrid vehicle purchases. This comes after a recent report revealed a decline in sales following the removal of certain tax exemptions.

Warning Issued

The Australian Finance Industry Association alerted the public on Monday. Their report on electric vehicles and hybrids highlighted the issue. Australians financed almost 105,000 low-emission vehicles last year, reflecting a jump of over 40,000 cars, indicating a strong interest in these types of cars.

Sales Dip

The report also shows that the removal of a tax exemption for plug-in hybrid cars this year led to a noticeable drop in sales. This data arrives amid predictions about modifications anticipated when penalties begin in July due to exceeding emissions under Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard.

Financial Data

The association’s study found that finance companies provided $6.17 billion for electric and hybrid vehicle loans in 2024. This represents a 50% rise compared to 2023. Over 104,800 low-emission vehicles were purchased under finance during the year. This total includes more than 60,000 hybrids and 44,000 battery electric vehicles.

Without renewed incentives, Australia could lag behind other nations. Further investment in green transport options is vital for meeting environmental goals.
