SNL Audience Drops F-Bomb, Leaving Comedian Ego Nwodim Stunned
During a “Weekend Update” segment, an audience on Saturday Night Live unexpectedly dropped a curse word, surprising comedian Ego Nwodim. The actress and comedian shared her initial reaction to the moment and its impact.
The Unscripted Moment
During a chat with Collider, Nwodim recounted the unexpected incident from a season 50 episode. She was caught off guard when some audience members yelled the word “shit” during a question posed by her character, Miss Eggy.
Nwodim recalled the surprise of the incident, saying, “We did not anticipate that happening.”
The expletive was removed for rebroadcasts.
“When they said ‘shit,’ I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh’ on air.”

The comedian admitted that her first thought was that SNL creator Lorne Michaels would be displeased. She also stated that she was thrilled by the audience’s reaction.
Improvisation and Aftermath
Even though the incident caught her off guard, Nwodim embraced the situation. She improvised in character, resulting in a memorable experience. She does not know if SNL was fined by the FCC.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) does have rules regarding the broadcasting of indecent material. The agency prohibits indecent content between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center study, 28% of Americans say they swear frequently in everyday conversations (Pew Research).
A Night of Surprises
The comedian said she was shocked the audience chose to swear. Nwodim said the incident was “really cool.” She also expressed that it was like a “little dance with the audience.”
The event provided an opportunity for improvisation and a unique connection with the audience.
