The Tragedy That Sparked a Movement

In 2023, Michael Brown was participating in a first responder charity golf tournament on Martha’s Vineyard when he was stung by a wasp. Despite having no prior history of allergies, he experienced a severe anaphylactic reaction.

“In the 15 years that we were together, he had been stung probably three to four times with nothing more than a little red bump,” Ms. Shai Brown explained to the committee.

The proposed legislation, which Ms. Shai brown refers to as the Michael Brown Law, would authorize organizations where allergens are likely to be present to train their staff in the use of epinephrine auto-injectors and to stock the devices for emergency situations. State Representative Thomas Moakley and state Senator Julian Cyr, representing the Island in the State House, introduced the bill.

“Every second counts during an anaphylactic reaction,” Mr. Moakley said. “This legislation is a commonsense, life-saving measure that will prevent unnecessary tragedies and ensure help is available when and where it’s needed most.”

Ben sullivan, a friend of Mr. Brown who witnessed his death, also testified in support of the bill. He recounted the harrowing experience of watching Mr. brown struggle to breathe during the golf tournament. Despite the presence of first responders, neither they nor the golf course had epinephrine available.

“The fact is when you are holding your friend’s hand and every second he can’t breathe,and literally have something that’s life-saving that could be there,I realized we as a society failed Mike that day,” Mr. Sullivan stated.
