massive Protests Erupt in Hungary Against Orbán’s Goverment

BUDAPEST, Hungary – An estimated 15,000 demonstrators gathered in a central Budapest square on Tuesday, signaling what organizers are calling the genesis of a resistance movement against the administration of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The protests highlight growing concerns over governmental policies and democratic backsliding.

Public Figures Join the Resistance

Nearly two dozen prominent Hungarian figures, including writers, actors, musicians, and journalists, participated in the demonstration. Speakers voiced strong criticisms of what they perceive as the government’s increasingly anti-democratic practices. Allegations of corruption, notably benefiting those connected to Orbán’s Fidesz party, were also a central theme of the protest.Csaba bogos, one of the speakers, declared, “This country doesn’t belong to those who lie, who rob from the people, who have sold their humanity for power,” emphasizing a call for unity and peaceful progress.

Controversial Laws Fuel Public Anger

The demonstration is the latest in a series of anti-government protests that have occurred since Orbán’s party enacted a law in March, followed by a constitutional amendment in April, effectively prohibiting public LGBTQ+ events. This law has been widely criticized by human rights organizations. Moreover, the legislation permits authorities to employ facial recognition technology to identify and penalize participants in unauthorized assemblies, prompting accusations that Orbán is steering Hungary toward an autocratic model akin to Russia under Vladimir Putin.

Facial recognition technology is increasingly used globally for surveillance, with the market projected to reach $14.5 billion by 2028, according to a report by Fortune Business Insights.
