Tyler Benson’s Hockey Journey: From SHL Disappointment to German Possibility
Tyler Benson, once a highly touted prospect, is embarking on a new chapter in his hockey career. After a challenging stint in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) with Modo Hockey, Benson has signed with the Kassel Huskies of the German second league (DEL2). His move comes after Modo’s relegation to HockeyAllsvenskan.
The Promise and the Reality
Benson’s early career was marked by meaningful promise. He was drafted in the second round of the 2016 NHL draft by the Edmonton Oilers, his hometown team. He also earned a bronze medal with Canada’s U18 national team at the U18 World Championship.

He was even benched at times and only played in three of the six relegation games against HV71, where he managed 1 goal and 1 assist.
A New Beginning in Germany
With Modo’s relegation and the expiration of his contract, Benson became a free agent. The 27-year-old forward has now signed with the Kassel Huskies, hoping to revitalize his career in Germany’s second-highest league.

Benson will join a team that includes some familiar names. Goaltender Brandon Maxwell, who has played for Rögle in Allsvenskan and Malmö in the SHL, is also on the Huskies’ roster. Additionally, forward Dominic Turgeon, son of former NHL star Pierre Turgeon, who played for Södertälje in the 2023/24 season, will be a teammate.
