ReVolt Motors Secures First Fleet Partner for Hybrid Electric Semi Trucks

Austin, Texas-based ReVolt Motors has achieved a notable milestone by securing its first fleet partner, Page Trucking, for its innovative ReVolt EREV (extended Range Electric Vehicle) hybrid electric semi truck. This partnership marks a crucial step in the adoption of hybrid technology within the commercial trucking industry.

The ReVolt EREV: A hybrid Solution

The ReVolt EREV is built upon the robust Peterbilt 579 commercial semi truck platform. It promises a substantial 40% advancement in fuel economy and more than double the torque compared to conventional diesel-powered counterparts. This dual-power system combines battery-electric torque with a diesel-extended range of up to 1,200 miles, offering a practical solution for long-haul trucking.

Page Trucking: Rolling the Dice on Hybrid Technology

Page Trucking, a specialist carrier, is initially deploying five ReVolt EREV trucks, with a potential follow-up order for 15 more units pending the successful performance of the initial batch. This decision reflects a growing interest in sustainable and cost-effective trucking solutions.

How the revolt System Works

ReVolt’s engineering team modifies the Peterbilt by removing the transmission and drive axle, replacing them with a large generator head and batteries. The existing diesel engine remains in place, generating electrical energy that is stored in the batteries. This energy then powers the truck’s 670 hp e-axles, delivering an impressive 3,500 lb-ft of torque from 0 rpm.

This setup allows the ReVolt truck to function as an electrically driven semi, similar to an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). it boasts sufficient battery capacity to operate as a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) in designated clean zones, such as ports and urban areas. A key advantage is the ability for drivers to utilize the “hotel” function for up to 34 hours without idling the engine or requiring a grid connection.

Addressing Critical Industry Needs

The ability to “hotel” within the cab is particularly significant given the ongoing shortage of semi-truck parking and the increasing volume of goods transported across the country. ReVolt trucks can seamlessly integrate into existing long-haul routes without relying on a fully developed commercial truck charging infrastructure.

Drivers should not have to choose between losing their longtime routes because of changing regulatory environments or losing the truck in which they have already made significant investments. American truckers want their trucks to reflect their identity, and our retrofit technology allows them to continue driving the trucks they love while still making a living.

ReVolt vs. Hyliion: A Comparative Look

The ReVolt concept shares similarities with the earlier efforts of Hyliion, another Austin-based company. Hyliion previously developed EREV Peterbilts using a 15L Cummins diesel engine as a generator, coupled with a similar battery and e-axle arrangement. Notably,ReVolt’s CTO,chandra Patil, and Director of Engineering,Blake Witchie, both previously held positions at Hyliion.

While Hyliion has shifted its focus, ReVolt appears to be capitalizing on the initial concept, with Page Trucking eager to implement the technology.

Industry Viewpoint

Our industry is undergoing a major transition, and fleet owners need practical solutions that make financial sense while reducing our environmental impact. ReVolt’s hybrid drivetrain lowers our fuel costs, providing our drivers with a powerful and efficient truck, all without the need for expensive charging infrastructure or worrying about state compliance mandates. The reduced emissions also enable our customers to reduce their Scope 2 emissions.
Dan Titus, CEO of Page Trucking

Page Trucking operates a fleet of approximately 500 trucks, serving the agriculture, hazardous materials, and bulk commodities sectors throughout Texas. The success of ReVolt’s EREV semis could lead to a significant expansion of their hybrid fleet.
