The first cholera vaccines arrive in Haiti

“With the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Haiti received today [lunes] approximately 1.17 million doses of oral cholera vaccine as cases continue to rise in the country,” the PAHO said in a statement.

About 500,000 additional doses will be provided “in the coming weeks”.

The vaccine (Evichol) was provided by the International Coordination Group (ICG) on Vaccine Supply, which manages the global stockpile of cholera vaccines, at the request of the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), the organization.

The vaccination campaign will initially focus on the most affected areas of the country (Cite Soleil, Delmas, Tabarre, Carrefour and Port-au-Prince, as well as Mirabelais) and will target inhabitants over the age of one.

Cholera caused more than 10,000 deaths between 2010 and 2019 in this crisis-ridden country, where one in two Haitians does not have enough to eat. The UN is preparing a humanitarian plan for 2023 estimated at 719 million dollars, almost double that planned for 2022.
