6 SUVs to Avoid in 2026, According to Consumer Reports

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Consumer Reports has issued warnings about six popular SUV models in 2026, citing reliability issues, poor fuel efficiency and uncomfortable designs. The findings arrive as SUVs continue to dominate the automotive market, particularly among families, a demographic often referred to as “soccer moms.”

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, a vehicle long considered a standard in the SUV class, received criticism for its fuel economy, achieving only 20 MPG. Consumer Reports recommends the 2025 Subaru Outback as an alternative, noting its superior 24 MPG and optional 260-hp engine. The 2025 Honda Passport, with 21 MPG, was also suggested as a comparable option.

The 2026 Jeep Compass was flagged for its awkward handling and uncomfortable interior. The report suggests the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek as a more practical choice, highlighting its spacious cabin, smoother ride, and lower starting price of $27,000. The Crosstrek also features an all-wheel-drive system called X-Mode.

Luxury SUV buyers were cautioned against the 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale, which Consumer Reports found lacking in quality despite its premium price tag. The vehicle was described as having a cheap-feeling interior and a subpar ride. The 2026 BMW X1 was recommended as a superior alternative, offering a more comfortable ride and a more stylish cabin, including a “floating” center console.

The 2025 Mazda CX-90, whereas offering decent fuel efficiency at 25 MPG, was noted for reliability concerns, particularly in its plug-in hybrid version. Consumer Reports suggests the 2025 Toyota Highlander Hybrid as a more dependable option, boasting 35 MPG and ample space.

The 2026 GMC Terrain was criticized for its limited capabilities and modest 175-hp engine, achieving only 24 MPG. The 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid was presented as a more versatile and reliable alternative, offering 34 MPG.

Finally, the 2026 Land Rover Defender, despite its spacious interior, was deemed outdated due to its poor fuel economy of just 18 MPG. The 2026 BMW X5 was recommended as a more modern and efficient choice, with 23 MPG and an available plug-in hybrid engine offering 39 miles of all-electric range.

The findings reflect a broader trend of increased scrutiny on SUV performance and efficiency, even as the vehicles remain popular, particularly with families. TrucksAuthority.com notes that SUVs are favored by soccer moms for their spaciousness, safety features, and convenience, with over 50,000 soccer moms in America utilizing them. However, the Consumer Reports assessment suggests that not all SUVs live up to the expectations associated with this demographic.
