5 Costco Garage Products You Should Avoid Buying | SlashGear

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

Costco members seeking to outfit their garages with shelving, floor jacks, tiles, or storage solutions should exercise caution, as a number of recently-reviewed products from the wholesale retailer have drawn criticism for shipping damage, assembly difficulties, and performance issues.

Among the most frequently-complained-about items is SafeRacks Garage Shelving, available in white or gray and in three different sizes. While currently holding a 4-star overall rating on Costco’s product page based on 6,109 reviews, a significant 1,561 of those reviews are three stars or lower. Customers report receiving units severely damaged during shipping – often in multiple packages – and missing essential parts needed for assembly. YouTuber Praveen takur has also documented the challenging assembly process. Some reviewers even allege structural failures after completing assembly.

The CAT 3-in-1 4,000 lb. Floor Jack, priced at $239.99, has also received mixed reviews. While lauded for its innovative design intended to lift cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, transmissions, and differentials, many customers claim it fails to lift or adequately hold all of those items. Others report malfunctions after limited apply, bringing the jack’s user rating down to 4.1 stars. Complaints also include issues with the jack’s height being incompatible with some vehicles and slow pumping times. AllTrade Goods, a garage-focused YouTube channel, suggests CAT’s 3-ton Low-Profile Floor Jack as a potentially better alternative, available at the same price point through Costco.

Costco’s Supreme Garage Floor Tiles, sold in 8-pack sets for $91.99, have also prompted concerns. The tiles, manufactured by Shop Mats Inc., currently hold a 4.2-star rating, but customer testimonials describe significant discrepancies between the product advertised online and the tiles received. Complaints range from difficult installation and a cheap, flimsy feel to frequent slipping and streaking from vehicle tires, raising questions about overall durability.

A Luxor 3-Shelf Heavy Duty Cart, selling for $112.99, also faces scrutiny. With a 4.2-star customer satisfaction rating based on 658 reviews, 128 of which are three stars or lower, users report receiving damaged units unable to be assembled. Poor design and low-quality parts are also cited as issues, with some customers claiming shelves separated during light use. A review by Garage Kitchen of Science acknowledged the cart’s generally positive attributes but noted the assembly process required significant force.

Finally, the Mirador 205 Gallon Metal Storage Box, priced at $399.99, is the lowest-rated item discussed, receiving 3.5 stars from 139 users. A common complaint is severe damage during shipping, alongside difficult assembly and easily-bent metal materials. Some users also report the box’s bottom is prone to damage. While other online reviewers have praised similar Mirador storage boxes, customers are advised to consider purchasing from alternative retailers to avoid potential shipping issues.

The selection of these items was based on a review of Costco product pages, focusing on products with low star ratings and a substantial number of user reviews – exceeding 100 – to ensure a representative sample of customer experiences. Professional reviews were consulted to corroborate or challenge consumer perspectives.
