Police received an initial report at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Sunday regarding three suspicious vehicles traveling toward RAF Fairford. Armed officers responded swiftly to the alert, intercepting and arresting the five suspects in nearby Whelford. According to Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone, authorities advised roughly 85 households in the immediate vicinity to evacuate early Sunday morning as a precautionary measure.

A 400-meter cordon was established around the intercepted vehicles while the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit examined the site. Aerial footage broadcast by Sky News captured a bomb disposal robot operating between three white vans, with the rear doors of two vehicles standing open. Police later stated that they believe the situation is contained, though the five men remain in custody for ongoing questioning by counterterrorism detectives.

Strategic Importance of the Air Base and International Response

RAF Fairford serves as a critical military asset, functioning as a forward operating location for the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command. The installation hosts both the 501st Combat Support Wing Headquarters and the 420th Air Base Squadron, designating it as the preferred bomber forward operating location in Europe according to U.S. Air Force data. B-52 and B-1 bombers, which American forces used to carry out strikes against Iranian missile sites.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the incident as deeply concerning in a public statement shared on X. “The safety and security of the public is our first priority, and I want people to know that we will always take every step necessary to protect our communities and keep our country safe,” Burnham wrote, urging the public to avoid speculation while authorities establish the facts. U.S. President Donald Trump addressed reporters regarding the arrests, describing them as fantastic and noting that the suspects had been under surveillance by security forces for an extended period. Investigators have not officially confirmed that RAF Fairford was the definitive target of the plot, nor has a suspected connection to Iran been verified by authorities.
