3 Dead, 15 Injured: High Waves Strike Tenerife & Canary Islands

Canary islands Hit‌ by Deadly Waves, Authorities Issue Island-Wide Warning

A series⁢ of incidents today across Tenerife and other Canary Islands have resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries due ‌to unexpectedly powerful waves. Authorities have⁣ issued a warning urging residents and tourists to​ stay away from the ‌coastline.

The first incident occurred ‍late ⁤afternoon in⁣ Puerto de la Cruz, on ‍the north of Tenerife, when a large⁣ wave ‌swept ten people off the pier and into the harbor. One ⁤woman was​ pronounced dead ​at the scene despite resuscitation attempts. Of the remaining nine, three are‍ in very serious condition and four sustained minor injuries. All were transported to‌ hospitals across the island via helicopter and ambulance.

Further ‍south, ‌near Granadilla de Abona, lifeguards recovered the body of a man found floating ‍in the sea. Despite efforts ‍to revive him,he was also pronounced dead.

A third fatality occurred near La Guancha, also ‌on the north ‍side of Tenerife, early this evening. Coast guard boats and a helicopter were deployed to search for a man who had ‍fallen into the sea. While ‍located by a rescue​ team,his ‍injuries‌ proved too severe for survival,and he was pronounced​ dead en ⁢route to a hospital.

Earlier in the day,⁢ near the village of Taganana, six French tourists were swept into⁤ the water by a large wave while viewing the Roque de Las Bodegas rock formation. Four of the⁣ tourists were injured and are currently receiving hospital treatment. The nationalities of the​ other individuals involved in ​the incidents‍ remain unconfirmed.

Despite forecasts of unsettled weather in the coming days,the Canary Islands experienced clear skies today,drawing many people to the⁤ coast. Following these tragic events, authorities have issued ​a warning for all islands, strongly​ advising the public‍ to avoid the sea ⁤and stay a safe distance from the water’s edge.
