28-year-old fighter Cody Chovancek detailed the physical and mental toll of fighting through a severe injury five weeks before his appearance on the Contender Series, followed by extensive rehabilitation at the UFC Performance Institute.

Recovering From Injury Before the Octagon Debut

Chovancek stated that he injured himself five weeks prior to his Contender Series fight and spent the remainder of the camp managing the issue. He explained that the condition worsened after the bout, prompting him to seek professional medical intervention down at the UFC Performance Institute. According to Chovancek, the facility handled his rehabilitation, strength work, and nutrition.

That was really trying me, man, going through that injury.

Chovancek said, describing the mental strain outside of training camps.

I injured myself five weeks before that fight on Contender Series. We went through the rest of that camp babying it, did the work we could. I fought through it and afterwards, it was even worse. I went down to the PI, did the proper work — shout out to the PI for all the rehabilitation, strength work, nutrition; they got us covered… It was really trying mentally.

Mentorship and Team Support Leading Into Edmonton

Heading into the upcoming card in Edmonton where the Edmonton Oilers play, Chovancek pointed to the guidance of veteran fighters and his coaching staff as stabilizing factors during his preparation. He noted that Mike has been helpful for mentorship and conversations regarding the shared experiences of professional fighters. Chovancek added that the advice received was simply to trust the process, the work being put in, and the coaching staff.

The fighter also noted that familiarity with the area helps ease the transition to the major stage, having previously competed under the Unified MMA banner and traveled to the region for family visits and outdoor activities. He described the destination as part of his legacy, emphasizing the energy of Canadian fans and the presence of his teammates and coaches on-site in Edmonton.
